Dear basketball friends,
More than 10 years ago, Bultex 99 Ltd. took on the challenge of returning BC Akademik to Bulgaria’s sporting map.
Why did we take on this difficult task, especially amid a severe financial crisis?
Because some of us remember, while others had learned from their loved ones and relatives, that BC Akademik had been one of the sporting symbols of our city.
We were driven by the immense desire to be the company whose help would restore the club’s status as one of the leading clubs in Bulgaria; to see the men’s team become a reality again after an 18-year hiatus; to see the halls filled once more with fans applauding their favorite team. Above all, we wanted to see the sparkle return to the children’s eyes—in the training hall or at a game supporting their idols. We stood behind this desire under our name, BULTEKS 99, and the results are visible to all of you:
Men’s team in the NBL;
Boys under 12—Bulgarian champions;
Boys under 14—Bulgarian champions;
Balkan League champions under 14;
Youth League champions;
Bulgarian Cup semifinalists;
Bulgarian Championship semifinalists;
3rd place in the Balkan League and 1st place this season, with the championship discontinued because of the COVID-19 pandemic;
Many tournament victories…
We are proud of what we have achieved over these 10 years, happy for the many children who have developed a passion for the game, and confidently moving forward with a new idea for building on what has already been accomplished.
We firmly believe that the name Akademik is a brand of Plovdiv and, as such, deserves broader support from businesses in the city, as well as from all Plovdiv residents, sports fans, and basketball fans in particular.
We consciously decided to withdraw our name from the name of the basketball club because we believe that this will make realizing the idea above much easier. Of course, this does not change our commitments to the club; on the contrary, we will continue to provide financial support to the team, but with the clear understanding that it deserves much more. This club, with its 70-year history, belongs to all Plovdiv residents, and its name itself should be a beloved Plovdiv brand, not the brand of a single company. We should all know and remember that BC Akademik’s sporting achievements are the accomplishments of several generations of Plovdiv residents, which is why we made our decision convinced that it was the right thing to do.
